Flown by Neil Armstrong and Dave Scott in March 1966, this two-person capsule completed the world’s first successful space docking before overcome by a critical thruster anomaly that required Armstrong to perform an emergency splashdown recovery. Shortly after docking, a stuck thruster caused the spacecraft to roll uncontrollably at nearly one revolution per second—a potentially fatal situation. Armstrong used the reentry control thrusters to stabilize the capsule and safely return to Earth, demonstrating the incredible skill that would later make him the choice to command Apollo 11. © Mike Lynaugh Photography
